Wishes and Looking Ahead

I started off the Labor Day Weekend with lots of wishes. I wished we were going away for one last summer celebration. I wished I could spend the weekend doing nothing but stitching. I wished we had another week off for summer vacation. I wished this summer could go on forever.

In reality, we were home, I did not stitch, we start school tomorrow and fall officially starts in a few short weeks.

Yesterday I had no plans. I actually tore apart my laundry room and gave it a good clean. In the midst of doing that, my best friend K called to see what we were doing. Nothing much!! Well, we decided to get together later. A few minutes later, my other best friend S called and said her and her DH are going to have an impromptu bbq for the 6 of us. In other words, we were going to let summer go out with a bang. At that moment while cleaning off shelves and such, it hit me. I had an awesome summer. In a few short months, DH and I became best friends with two other couples. We all click and when one set of us is not there we miss them. You see, K and K were gone last week on vacation and we pretty much got together with the other couple all week. Of course we had fun all week, but when the 6 of us are together it just goes to the next level of fun and laughs. And laugh we did.

We ate great food that all of us brought, we laughed lots and we had a few beers. With those beers we toasted. We toasted to the great friendships that are now deep rooted, we toasted to the end of summer, and most importantly we toasted to the upcoming fall, winter, spring and then next summer. We made promises that we still need to see each other and get together as much as we did in the summer. When that toast was made, we all looked at each other and knew, we just knew, that that is one promise that is not going to be broken.

We have lots to look forward to together. We are still going to do the round robin dinners every other month. We are going to have a Christmas celebration with the kids and they will do Pollyannas. We are going to the mountains one weekend in the winter. K and K and us are going to Cancun next year on a family all inclusive vacation. S and K can't go as their kids are still way too little (3 and 8 months). We also decided to move our Friday night hangouts to Saturday. Actually that one is still in the air. At this moment, we want to do both but with football season, it may move to Saturday and Sunday instead of Friday and Saturday. But the best part of all of this is that we all understand each other and while we all come from different areas and are different ages, all the differences make up this whole that is so awesome. Like I said, we just click and even our kids who range from 12 years to 8 months click too. Those young friendships are going to be life long. We all know it.

A little over a year ago, I moved here with no one to call friend. My greatest wish last year was to have my children find friends and for me to have a best friend. I mourned what I left behind and tried so hard to stay in touch with those friends I left in my old neighborhood. Now it is 14 months later and I (and DH too) have the bestest of friends only a few houses away.

I am looking forward to many fun times ahead. Sometimes you have to be careful of what you wish for. Somehow my wishes have come true and I have been blessed with more than I ever wished for.

I can't believe how fast summer has gone by. I'm so happy for you and your family having made such good friends in your neighbourhood. My parents had a number of good neighbourhood friends when we were kids and I'm still in touch with some of their children. Sadly I don't even know the names of most of my neighbours. Everyone seems to work and to be in a big rush all the time. Are you counting down the days until CATS??

I'm so glad that you have settled in so well, Mia. And no, I can't believe that CATS is so close. Must start saving my pennies again!

you wrote a beautiful entry, Mia. it's good to reflect sometimes and count your blessings. you've reached a lot in one year: the children are doing great, you as a family settled in great, what more can you wish for.
you go girl... ;)

Mia, you are so lucky to have wonderful friends. We were one of the first in our neighborhood and we still have some close friends. My neighbor remodeled his home recently and then landscaped, my dh told him to go ahead and put in a gate to our backyard. That's another story, but that's how close we are with them. Today marks 20 years in this house and I can still remember clearly moving in on that first day. Cheers, you write beautifully.
